Photographs in this season from your truffière would help (send them please). This information is collated from the French and Spanish texts and Australian grower feedback
End of bianchetto truffle harvest (as you’ve probably realised).
Tasks
With the end of truffle growth, you can now do the activities that require tractors that will always compact the soil. If the soil is wet with late rain, you should delay driving over the rows. Otherwise it’s time for activities that will open the soil tilth, ripping and surface tilling
Pruning of young plantations.
Pruning of productive plantations.
Heavy pruning and pollarding of hazelnut trees to ensure production (renovation)
Contributions such as liming and chemical or organic fertilization based on soil analysis.
If you’re not choosing an organic path, it’s a safer time for chemical weed control. Chemicals such as Basta are less effective in cold weather.
Spring and early summer are the best times to analyse mycorrhizas. You should also consider sampling roots for microscopical analysis, sampling soil for DNA quantification, testing soil for nutrients, and other parameters, controlling pests, weed, soil texture.
These provide you with useful information to manage truffle orchards, and improve truffle production. The reports can also identify the main pests of each season, correlate annual mycorrhizal growth with different parameters like climate, management, irrigation.
